It’s the day before the BIG day and I’ve spent it listening to an old favorite Arrested Development album. I feel dreamy, trying to soak in the impact of what voting in the first African American President into office means. It is the perfect soundtrack for the moment and even better that it’s 16 years old. AD, like so many other African Americans have been holding the space for so long, paving the way, believing in the ultimate hope and change for their race, for our country, for the world.
Pride must be overflowing from so many hearts…I will be honored to cast my vote tomorrow, I can’t imagine a better man, *regardless of race.

While I get it that race is factor, the color of Barack Obama’s skin is of little concern to me. I believe his ability to draw people together, to invoke critical mass toward change for the better and in his passion and compassion for the world. I was thrilled last week to cast my early vote here in Ohio for Barack. Today is a milestone in history, no matter the outcome (but I pray that the result is that Barack does get the title ‘president’ before his name!)

Oh I very much agree Patty….I most definitely believe and champion in his abilities as a person and leader(which was my primary reason for voting for him), skin color being irrelevant.
at the same time…
I think living in Richmond (the capital of the confederacy) has me feeling especially sensitive to what this means to the African American community at large. I’m so embarrased to admit that my city’s roots and history have developed a stronghold that even still exists today.
As a white woman I can’t begin to understand or know the path my African American friends (or their ancestors) have walked but I (and you too i’m sure) do celebrate with and for them as we all get a chance to write a new part of history.
Thanks for sharing patty, your words are always so eloquent, gentle and true…It gave me a chance to clarify too.

I love that picture of Arrested Development. They look like they are so happy for Barack to be elected too!
I am so excited today, I can barely stand it. Too excited and nervous to work, to eat, to do anything but hope and obsessively read anything I can get my hands on about how good his chances are.

As for the election, I’m Canadian, and even here there’s excitement in the air today. The hope is so powerful. 🙂

The feeling Arrested Development always evoked in me in my teens was this: HOPE. And that’s what an Obama presidency means to me as well. While his color is not related to his ability to serve as president, his color *is* significant just for the fact that our country has held hope and created great change during his own lifetime.
Racial tensions are still alive and kicking in Richmond, but seeing so many Obama signs this fall, feeling the possibility that Virginia might turn blue this year, has renewed that sense of hope in me. Look how far we have come! We can go even farther. Yes, we can.
